A New Trend

How many times have you seen the ol' point-to-the-sky-to-thank-God-for-my-goal/homerun/basket in sports?

Or how many times have you seen a player make the sign of the cross endless times before he starts a game, begging God to help him do well?

I have to admit, as much as I love sports, I'm always a bit disappointed when I see these gestures.

Don't get me wrong, I think its great that these athletes are thinking about God, and hopefully thanking Him for their talents.

But I wonder if those same people make the sign of the cross as they walk past homeless people.

Or point to the sky every time they see God working one of His many miracles here on Earth.

You know, for things that really matter.

I know I don't.

But I might from now on.

God Bless.

Good point Michael.

I wonder too, how many of these sportsmen are really Christian - or do they do these gestures out of habit, or because they've seen others do them!

God bless you friend.

Thanks for this one, Michael. It's easy to forget that the Sign of the Cross is actually a prayer and should be said and made as such.
Good food for thought!
Thanks again and God Bless!

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I see this all the time and quite frankly, it irritates me. Are these athletes sincere? Are they being genuine? I think of that scriptue that says (And I don't know where it can be found in the bible) "Pray to me privately, where no one else can see." Right?
Your not suppose to be show-offy.
I see this a lot even in the chapel of all places.
Not trying to be judgemental. But it's out there.
I think this was a great post. And thanks for bringing it up.

Victor, Karinann, Daily Grace, and Anne - thanks so much for taking the time to comment on my post.

I have always wondered about that too. Is a game that important? I don't know what the answer is either.

It really bothers me after a boxing match. You pummel the person half to death and then thank God. I just don't get it.
