Sharing a Post: A song saves that lives

My blogging friend Victor at Time for Reflections has a beautiful post about a song that has saved many babies from abortion.

Today, on March for Life 2017 day, I thought it would be a very timely post to share with you.

Please pray for the unborn, and any mothers or fathers struggling with their decisions.

Starring Roles in Today's Epiphany

As I heard the Gospel today, it dawned on me that the Epiphany wasn't a one-time story.

It repeats itself even today.

And the stars are as follows:

1. Jesus as Himself.  While He is no longer an infant, He is certainly present for us to visit every day in the Eucharist.  
2. Those involved in abortions as Herod.  Herod killing all boys age two and under sounds like barbaric history.  It was. But it also happens today - in even greater numbers.
3. Some of us as the Magi.  There are some who seek Him, not only at Mass, but in other people as well.  They pay respect to Him.  And venerate in awe of Him.
4. Others of us as the rest of the world.  Yes, the wise men and shepherds proclaimed the wonder of God.  And sometimes we are like them.  But the rest of the world most likely went about their daily lives - oblivious to His presence right in front of them.  And, unfortunately, we are also sometimes like them as well.

When we aren't starring as the Magi or Others, we have the opportunity to pray.  

To pray that we never lose sight of Him, the way the wise men never lost sight of that star.  To pray that when we find our Savior, we acknowledge His presence and pay Him the homage he deserves.  And to pray that those who practice abortion have a change of heart and repent.

A Chance

I owe my parents a world of thanks.

They gave me a wonderful childhood, filled with love, security, and encouragement.

They provided for me.

They taught me and gave me perspective.

And they gave me a great foundation for my faith today.

But ironically, it's the one thing they did NOT do that I am most thankful for.

They did not kill me.

Over 42 million children in the world were not so lucky last year. They were killed before they even took their first breath.

42 million.

If that group were a state in the U.S., it would be the largest.

If that group were a country it would be the world's 30th most populous ... larger than countries like Canada, Argentina, and Poland.

If that group all grew up to be followers of Christ ... imagine how much better our planet would be.

God has a plan for all of us. From the minute we are conceived (and probably even before that) to the minute He calls us back.

Today, my prayers are for all of those who do not get the chance to accept that plan.

And even more so, for those who think their plan is better.

Abortion as a Campaign Issue

If you are like me, you have probably asked yourself at one time or another, “How should Catholics evaluate a candidate?”

After all, I’ve yet to see a candidate that embodied all of the qualities and views I would want. So how are we to know which issues are most important?

The Catholic Key published a very good article written by Bishop Finn (Diocese of KC), which you can read here. The article focuses on abortion as the most important issue and how Catholics, by choosing a pro-choice candidate, are “put[ing] aside their conscience on this life and death issue.”

There have also been various groups that argue that there are more issues to think about than just abortion - distribution of wealth and caring for the poor for example. They argue that those issues are just as important as abortion, and represent other important areas of our faith.

After much thinking, and after hearing an excellent homily in my own church a week ago, the priority is much clearer for me. Life has to come before any other social or economic issues. Lower taxes, a better healthcare system, more jobs … none of them matter if a person is not given the chance to live.

I’m sure if you were given the choice between being alive and paying higher taxes, or being dead and having low taxes (or even no taxes!) you would chose life.

Everyone should get to make that choice for themselves.

Now, if only I could find that perfect candidate before November 4th …
