The Story Continues

Once upon a time, a priest friend of mine, after getting tired of hearing me yearn for more detail about the life of the Apostles and Evangelists, finally said:

"Why are you so interested in every little detail of the past?  The truth is, what WE are doing today is AS important ... if not MORE important ... than those little details."

That hit me like a ton of bricks.

Now in fairness, he wasn't saying that we were more important than those folks.  What he was inferring was that they already did their job.  They passed the Word down to the next generation.

Now its our job to do the same.

Our Faith relies on each generation carrying out the task successfully, regardless of obstacle. The early followers faced persecution. We face indifference.

(Sometimes it is hard to tell which is worse.)

In any case, that priest's words kept echoing in my head this Easter.  We read the Gospel proclaiming the Resurrection and it's easy to feel like the Easter story is over.

It's not.

We write a new chapter every single day.

God Bless.

Coincidentally, this is what the priest said in his sermon today.

There are many Catholics who don't go to church at all, and also many others who go to church out of habit rather than because of their conviction and beliefs. It is our job (he said) to preach the Word of God like those early disciples.

He then said, if we go to the supermarket and find a nice item for sale at a reduced price we'd probably buy it and tell our friends about it so they would do the same.

How much more important is eternal life with God than an item in the supermarket?

Why are we not telling everyone about it?

God bless.

One of our deacons who preached the homily today also touched on this. We should greet each other as those early Christians did: Christ is Risen! The response: Christ is truly risen!

Ah but reading about the lives of the Apostles and Evangelists inspires us to grow in love of God, and try to do His will; if we relied only on ourselves and those around us, ...well, it would hardly be inspiring, would it? God gave us the Communion of Saints to help us- and He knows we need all the help we can get in this age of indifference, neglect, and outright persecution of our faith.

It is very difficult not to get caught up in the whirl wind that is life today. Michael your posts always inspire and give hope. Every day is a new day to celebrate God's love for us. We should all spread that news though out the world. God bless You. I hope you have a great week.
